Career Development Specialist

Leslie Said:

How can I be successful as a fundraiser in the nonprofit sector?

We Answered:

If you have no experience working or interning at a nonprofit, it will be difficult getting your foot in the door. Most nonprofits can't afford to train someone, so there aren't many entry level jobs in the traditional sense. AmeriCorps VISTA is an option to get that experience that can lead to a career - there are always plenty of fundraising positions available at various nonprofits. Other than that, you may be able to find work in a membership department at a larger nonprofit. It's not glorious, you'd be doing mass mailings, making calls, managing membership databases and helping with fundraising events. www.craigslist.org and www.idealist.org always have plenty of nonprofit job listings in the DC area. Best of luck.

John Said:

What colleges in Pennsylvania can offer the required courses for a career as a " child life specialist"?

We Answered:

The best place to start is the Child Life Council's (CLC) website (www.childlife.org). They are the certifying body for child life specialists--they have great info on the curriculum requirements and career planning.

You didn't say where in PA, but the University of Pittsburgh has undergrad and grad degree programs that should apply. According to the CLC, Linda Wolf in the Applied Developmental Psychology department is the undergraduate program coordinator. Her email addy is lwolf@pitt.edu, and their website is at http://www.education.pitt.edu/adp/.

Also, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has a student training program in child life. Once the core requirements are satisfied at university, an internship or practicum will be required before testing and certification, so she may want to look into opportunities like these:
