I disagree with the naysayers because of Jim Langley - Jim is an older guy older than you and maybe even me. Check out his website. The dude is a historian and now is a featured columnist on RoadBikeRider.com. Recently he was featured as a racer that has gotten back into the racing scene. The dude has had a bunch of top ten finishes and a few top five and he outright won something.With the advent of specialized training with groups such as Charmichael Training Systems and Active.com plus many other awesome companies that make it their job to make you a better athlete you have all the tools you need. I wouldn't put it past you to get to that level and I don't even know you. But if you stayed military tough then you know how to work through the pain of hard training. Hell ten years ago we were all lean and mean fightin' machines. So, go for it! So start riding with your local bike club get contacts there with local teams and start training with a team and hopefully pick up a sponsor and then ride everything and and every race you can do to get the experience.
