Cindy Said:

What are the consequences of getting out of the military?

We Answered:

Let's look at what you said:

1. Grandfather is sick... while it is hard to be away when someone in the family is ill, how much help will you be able to provide being there?
2. Father laid off... so he has no money coming in. Yet you have a good paying job, with security.
3. Economy is bad and unemployment is high... why would you give up a job with benefits and security to go to an area where there is high unemployment?

You are better off supporting your family by having a secure job and sending whatever you can to help out. As for grandpa... take some leave and go home for a visit. Write him. Send him cards. Call him. I've seen too many people ask for humanitarian reassignments just to have the person they wanted to be near pass away, or they resent the amount of time they are expected to give to assist and support that person.

In the meantime... go talk with a chaplain, your 1st Sgt, or your Chief. Explain to them what is going on and ask for support and advice. A chaplain has one advantage... he is held to confidentiality laws regarding anything you two discuss. Plus... he's away from the work center... he has nothing at stake as opposed to your Chief or your 1st Sgt. Also... discuss this with your parents! Your father may say the same thing.... at least you have a job!

Good luck!!!
