introduction to engineering vs foundation of engineering?

We Answered:

intro to engineering sounds like an easy A class that may be a bit boring.

foundation of engineering sounds like a tougher class where they will teach you a bunch of stuff that you may or may not need depending on the engineering degree that you end up pursuing.

I would personally choose the tougher yet more interesting and useful class (foundation).

A little help in correcting my french paper?

We Answered:

( permet is to allow something. not working in this case).

you're actually pretty good! only minors errors and you write really cleary!
good luck with your paper!

Linux or Windows development moral dilemma?

We Answered:

This isn't a moral dilemma at all. I would compare it to a Dr. who decides to open a practice rather than go to Africa on a mission, but that wouldn't be at all fair. The first option is not immoral, and the second is doing something much more important than creating "free" software.

It's easy when you are in college to become enamoured of the "free" software, especially if you've never had a job or any expenses you paid yourself. When you graduate you finally realize you have to make a living.

Go to dice.com and compare search results for .net jobs with just about everything else other than Java. Pretty clear now, huh?

You can still contribute to OSS in your free time or in other ways, and it is possible to make a good living at it, like at Red Hat or even IBM, but I'd say you'd have a really hard time breaking into that.

I'm not trying to encourage or discourage you one way or another, but I think you just overestimate the moral value of OSS. There are some truly innovative examples that have had a huge impact, like Linux, Apache, and others. But at the end of the day most of it is not even innovative; it is just crude, blatant copying of other people's hard work. There's no moral value in that. I'm not saying it's wrong, but it's hardly something to aspire to.

ps. to one of the other respondents. PHP is indeed free and very good. But the .net SDK and Visual Studio Express are monetarily free too, at least.
