As for the pay, check salary surveys posted on the web. It varies by section of the country.

As for a full time career, there are many paths to take.

If you want to stay in development, then you need to stay current. Otherwise you will eventually be laid off and replaced by a fresh college grad.

You will have to specialize in a particular area of development as nowadays, except for small companies, nobody does it all. So you may work with communications protocols, GUIs, web development, etc.

If you become a guru in a particular area, you could be a consutltant or contractor - however the problem here is they either need that specialy or not.

You could branch off to a related area such as database administration or quality assurance.

You can opt to be a specialist in a particular software package such as SAP.
