i need advice regarding video game career?

We Answered:

There's no such thing as "too old". That being said, you need to realize that the video games industry is far more competitive and cutthroat than an equivalent software development job doing something else. You should expect to make less working more hours than you would somewhere else. It's not impossible to get a job, but it's going to be hard, and you're going to have to work for it. If I had to give you one piece of advice though, please read Tom Sloper's FAQs on working in the game development world. They are full of excellent advice. Here's a link:

should i take computer science or games development?

We Answered:

I went to Abertay and I hate the place with a passion. I studied Computer Science and I felt it was a waste of my time. They taught us out-dated and useless programming languages and the nearest we came to doing anything useful in games development was a bit of OpenGL.

Now, despite my hatred of Abertay, I would very much recommend their games development course. You'll learn useful stuff straight away and they have good contacts with the games industry which is rather important for afterwards when you go for a job.

Abertay will tell you a lot about their past students including David Jones and the rest from DMA Designs (Lemmings, etc), but the reality is that most of them were kicked out for not going to classes because they were busy teaching themselves game design. Now Abertay's got a games course, they're queueing up to offer them honorary degrees and pretend they supported them.

I used to run the web department for an ISP and I had to hire a bunch of web staff. I had a guy come into my office for an interview and when I asked him why he should get the job, he said "Because I've got a degree in Computer Science." My reply? "So what? It's not like you've learned anything about web design is it?"

A Computer Science degree is a great thing if you want to work in computing, but it shouldn't be the end of your studies. It's really just a general grounding in all aspects of computing. At that point, you should go for a specialist post-graduate course in whatever direction you want to go. But as an introduction to games design, you could do better by staying at home and teaching yourself.

So yeah, I'd go for the games design course and I'd go to Abertay to do it. They treat the games design students better than any others and the course is well regarded and probably their highest quality course. The computer science course is mainly taught by guys who started as maths or physics lecturers and almost none of them have worked in the real world. There are much, much better places to learn computer science.

The onyl other thing I would say about Abertay is to suggest you find your own accomodation. Abertay have a bit of a habit of promising accomodation that turns out not to be available when you actually get there. I can tell you horror stories about foreign students being left stranded and homeless at the airport. Most of the accomodation for Abertay is for first year students only and only one of the halls of residence is actually near the uni. If you go up for an interview, have a look at local property whilst you're there. The Tayside Solicitors Property Centre (Google it) publishes a list of available property every week and their office is about five minutes walk from Abertay in the direction of the train station.
