Morris Said:

What are the job/career prospects like for web design and development?

We Answered:

I'm in the IT field there is a shortage of Flash web designers. If you are just starting out I would suggest going that route about 100,000 salary a year starting and its relatively easy. O yea C++, Java-Script

How is the career market for web development in US?

We Answered:

Depends on the area you're in. I'm in an area of the US that has a lot of engineers, had a number of dot.coms that went bust, and had a number of programmers laid off, but web developers who knew their stuff were still able to do consulting work, working for small to medium sized companies updating and/or maintaining their web sites. I use to hang out with a bunch of consultants when I taught or coordinated web design, so I could keep up with the latest trends (1-2 years ago).

Rebecca Said:

I want to investigate a career in web development? can I get a job with a 1 or 2 year degree? prospects?

Web Development Career??

We Answered:

I'd stay out of web development - it's a crowded field and getting worse.

Go for software engineering, network system security, and so forth

WildBill - you are WAY OFF base on the design end. I have been doing it for 10 years - and NO ONE pays that today for a website unless it is a massive 30+ page site with major ASP data management software connected with DB management, and a whole ton more.

Most sites business wants only cost around $499, averaging around 8 hours of work, and that's if you can beat out the other 20 people ready to do it for less since they can work from a laptop out of a coffee shop.

Is my age okay to get a career in web developing?

We Answered:

19 is not too young to get into this area, I started when I was 18.

You've got to keep in mind that there is a difference between web design and web development. Web design is an art form, and you are going to need to portfolio of some sort to show the clients/employer of what you are capable of. Web Development is coding(scripting), and often you will need qualification, telling your employer/client that you know it doesn't cut the mustard.

There are a couple of avenues that you can take, you can become a freelance web developer/designer. You can look for small contracts, and if you don't have necessary experience then try and undercut your competitors ( but not too much).

For web development, do some short courses. If you know it, then it will be easy to pass. All you need is that paper to say that you know it.

The other thing that you have to keep in mind is that in the industry you don't really have any control over your ideas, what your client/employer sez is vital and you have to understand this. My personal experience was that I got into this industry at 18 (10 years ago), thinking that I could be very creative and everybody will love the creativity. However, I later found out that there was a lot more to web design and development than what I had thought. I started doing small contracts and there were a lot of sleepless nights as I tried to make different mock-ups to show the clients. I moved into web development because I started to hate doing the design work. Now I liaise with the clients, which gives me greater control over the design itself. This is because I'm now working for a company rather than free-lance.
