Career Placement Test

Robert Said:

how to get a job in the bar tender industry?

We Answered:

I am a bar tender, and i love it. I work in a bar/resteraunt, so im also a waitress. Waitress until 9pm, then im a barmaid. For the most part, all the people i work with are nice and friendly, you kind of have to be to work with enibriated customers. We get a laugh by the end of the night, watching customers try to dance, hit on us, or just get chatty. We fool around quite a bit whenever theres a quiet moment, dancing around behind the bar. I am in australia, and the pay rates here are really good, so tipping isnt a custom, but you know the good barmaids by how much extra they go home with at the end of the night. I usually go home with an extra $50-$60 at the end of the night, on top of my $100 nightly income. A bar tender is also in the entertainment industry, we have to keep the customers happy and coming back to drink here, because they like the atmosphere we provide. Its a good job if you are a naturally outgoing person, but you cant take anything personally, some people are happy drunks, others are sad and yet others again are angry drunks, and you get to see all of them. I got my start by working as a waitress in a licensed resteraunt, serving alcohol as well as food, then i moved to a club, didnt really like the pace there, so im back to a busy hotel/resteraunt, and im happy.

omg help!!!! I don't know what I want to choose as a career?

We Answered:

I too took an interest and skills test and got about a dozen career options based on my answers. I deleted several of them that didn't appeal to me and talked to the college's career placement office to connect with alumni in those fields where I'd like to learn more. Set up informational interviews - you know - what's your typical day like, what do you wish you had known starting out, which companies have a good reputation, which don't, what does the future look like for this occupation? Some I talked with over the phone and the local ones I met for coffee. Several gave me the names of additional people for more info. Each one was helpful. I've also done this for several people that came after me. Schools like to stay connected with their alumni. Probably your school does something like this too.

Bottom line - try not to stress yourself out. I thought when I got my first job it was so important to get it right because you only get one chance. I've learned you can always change your mind. That goes for everything - major, as well as career focus. I remember at the end of one year talking to a guy who was graduating as an accounting major with a very high GPA. Our school was known as very good for accounting. I asked him what he was going to do. He says doesn't think accounting is for him, going to head to California and look into movies. He's a director now. See, can always change your mind.

Good luck.

Need help with a placement test fear?

We Answered:

The great thing about a community college placement test is that unless you don't have a high school diploma or a GED, you can't "fail" it. The placement test is just done to help you and the counselors decide which level of classes to put you in.

Trust me, it is a lot better for you to go into a General Math class if the placement test says you need that, then go directly into a College Algebra class and have all the materials go over your head.... leaving you completely lost and unprepared.

Yes your results could possibly give you more classes to take. As for re-routing your career decision, usually its what happens AFTER you get enrolled in the classes (and subsequent classes) that might choose you to re-route your career decision. Example: If a degree in Radiology requires you to pass all the math classes up to Trigonometry (this is just an example, I have no idea the Math requirements for Radiology) and you can't get past the general Math class, you might consider your other options. If you get past the general Math class, but struggle with the Pre-College algebra class, you might consider other options. If you get past the 0 level classes and simply can't pass the College Algebra class, you have a serious problem.

It is my experience that those individuals who never had Algebra, Trig, Calculus and such in High School aren't going to have an easy time at is as those who did. But it does NOT mean you can't do it, it just means you have not been exposed to it.

Hope that helps.

PS: If you do not have a high school diploma or a GED and are taking the placement test for this reason as well, you can "fail" it. But not for admissions standards. (You can still enroll in college classes with poor scores). BUt if you do not make above a certain score in all areas, you can not receive federal financial aid to attend. Best think for you do to in that situation is to enroll in a GED class, study, study, study and pass your GED. With a GED you are no longer required to pass the ability to benefit test.

What should I study and plan to take certain courses if I wanted to be a Stockbroker or Bonds?

We Answered:

Good Question,

In High School take every math class you possibly can. You will want to be able to do basic percentage calculations in your head, other more complicated calculations will be done using software programs inherent in the profession.

In college you will need Finance and accounting classes. Find a school that has a program geared to financial courses. Take history and social courses also. To be successful at being a stock broker you need to understand trends in Human history. The most successful stock brokers are the ones that understand human nature. They are always trying to predict the future so that they can buy at a price that will give them a good return in the future.

Understanding finances and math are the easy part. After your financial courses you will want to absorb as much about economic trends and the direction of the country and the world as possible.

The most successful people in the world of finance specialise in a specific area. They become experts in, for example, the energy sector. They then become indespensible to other people for the advice. This is a knowledge based profession. You are not easily replaced if you know more than most in a given area. As you will learn, if you are one of the few people that can supply specific information, you will always be in above average demand.

Good Luck!
