careers helping children...?We Answered:
You would probably have to do counseling in a setting other than a school. Almost all states require that school counselors teach for at least three years in order to receive their counseling certification. The only other areas that I can think of that may not require teaching experience would be in more specialized situations such as treatment or juvenile detention facilities or actual social work (children's protective services).
My mom was a social worker for about 10 years. It's a very demanding job and you may have to work a lot of on-call hours. (Going to the ER in cases of abuse or neglect; There were a few times that she had to act as a witness during physical examinations for documentation purposes. Picking up kids from the jail after parents have been arrested, etc.)
IMHO, teaching would actually better prepare you for a career in child advocacy. You'd have a better grasp of many of the issues affecting children. A plus? Many school districts will help pay for or offer reduced tuition towards your master's certification.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Thanks for choosing to care for kids!
Best of luck,
Mon :-)

Family balance - children security and development? We Answered:
Have you ever talked to your mother in law to tell her how you want your son raised? I was in your position before. Look at your wife did she do well raising her? Is she smart? Did she do well so far in life? It sounds like she is. Buy some stuff for your mother in law to use. work with your child at night when you get home. My mother in law helped so much my son is now in 5th grade in the honors program and is doing well above average. Its the time you put in with the child. I loved coming home and seeing her reading a book every single day from day one she was amazing. We did discuss with her how we wanted him raised
