How would you develop a career as a psychotherapist?

We Answered:

First you need to complete an undergraduate degree. It doesn't really matter what you study, but some sort of social science (psychology or human development are some examples) is helpful. Then you need to go to graduate school. You can get a master's degree in social work or counseling. (You could also do a PsyD which is a PhD in Psychology but that takes a ton of schooling!) Then you need to work under a licensed supervisor and begin collecting counseling hours. After you complete all of your hours (this generally takes 2-3 years) you take a test to get your license. After that you are a licensed psychotherapist! You don't NEED to get licensed but you get paid more and you look more reputable. I graduated from grad school last year with an MSW and am currently working towards my license.
I hope this helps!
Undergraduate is 4 years and a master's degree is 2-3 so it is actually more like 8-10 years. It's a lot, but once you are in grad school you will get practical experience as well.

First of all- which country do you want to work in? Do you have Masters/Ph.D. qualifications or just Bachelors?

I'm certainly not an expert by any means on the Indian market (I'm from the States), but there should be plenty of posters here with experience with the Indian market.

Good luck.

What is a Good Age to start Develop a Career ?

We Answered:

You should start planning for your career as soon as you're old enough to work and know what you want to do professionally.

If you want to be a lawyer, see if you can get a job as a file clerk, receptionist, researcher or whatever in a law office.

If you want to be a doctor, see if you can get a job doing entry level things in a medical office or hospital. You could even begin by volunteering at a hospital.

When you send off applications to colleges to pursue your dream, you'll have some great experience that will put you a leg up against the competition plus you'll have experience under your belt when it comes to searching for your first job out of college, too.

Another advantage is that you get to see a closer up view of the profession to see whether you really might enjoy being in that profession or not.

I hope this helps!
