Developer Career Path

Dale Said:

How does one get into an IT developer career path?

We Answered:

Hello,

Formal instruction is the best way to learn a programming language. The degree of choice for programmers is either the Computer Information Systems degree or the Computer Engineering Technology degree. I would take a look at Phoenix University or Devry; they both offer these degrees.

I would actually recommend taking a few night classes and try it out before going full bore into computer programming; it isn't for everyone. Chances are, if your friend is good at math and is an all around logical person, he/she will do well in programming.

If your buddy doesn't want to start learning at a school or can't afford it, then drop down to the nearest book store and pick up a beginner programmer book on logic and design. Learning the basic concepts of computer programming is difficult, but once you have them down jumping from language to language is easy because it's really just a matter of syntax.

Anyways, best of luck to you and your friend! :)

What are some good career path options for software developers? i need some options before i quit?

We Answered:

I think you're out of luck there. Other jobs may have slightly less time in front of a computer, but not enough that it would make a difference. You can do onsite support, where you would go to different companies more often - but you'd still be working on computers when you got there.

I think you should become a yoga teacher ...

What is a good career path for a person who likes to research information, organize it, and write about it?

We Answered:

Technical writer was the first thing that came to mind; this is NOT JOURNALISM. Some of the "writing" you describe could be within an advertising/marketing dept. or web development portion of an IT concern or dept in a larger organization.

How is the career of a php developer in financial perspective?

We Answered:

It really depends on what part of the world you are in. I know that the freelance developer jobs are quickly on the rise in Asia because of the lower cost of developer work when compared to the cost of paying some one from Europe or North America. That said those same developers also have a bad reputation for low quality of work and/or unreadable/messy code. You get what you pay for I guess. That is not to say that good work doesn't come from those regions, but there is certainly a disproportionate amount of sloppy work.

If you are living in the United States then it will still depend on what region you are in as to how much you will get paid and how much work is available. For example there is not a lot of PHP work in the Kansas City area. There is a shortage of qualified PHP programmers there too, but the pay is considerably lower when compared to other major cities around the country.

The same can be said of any kind of software or web development really. But programming still pays better in most cases than the vast majority of jobs that don't require a masters degree or higher. You will need some experience first before you can land a decent job. Learn yourself up and volunteer to do some projects for some non-profit organizations to build up your portfolio.
