Education Career Development

Clayton Said:

What education is recommended for a career in weapons design ?

We Answered:

A degree in mechanical engineering is a good start, however the weapons of the future will almost certainly be "Beam" weapons, lasers, focused gamma rays, etc., and therefore electronic in their design. Follow up you're BSEE with a masters in electronic engineering and you're future is assured.

Is University the sure fire route to a successful career and development in life?

We Answered:

I don't know about more doors being opened for you, especially if you are a creative person. Somehow I always imagine creative people are more judged by their talent than their education.

I did not go to university after school either. At the age of 25 I did one year with the Open University but could not continue as my workload was too great.

I always regretted not having a degree and always felt somehow second class even though I had a superb job. I was the boss. It was just so embarrassing when people asked where I had gone to university and I had to say that I did not go.

I finally had a chance to complete my OU degree 25 years later. My grades were terrific and I had no problems as it was all beautifully presented. The OU has enough students to really spend money on great teaching materials.

So I no longer felt like a second class citizen which was great. But to my astonishment, I also found myself thinking more logically and having more mental discipline. I really think it would have been such an advantage to have had these skills earlier.

So yes, it worked and yes it was fun, fun fun. Take a look at their course offerings to see if any of them would appeal. Don't be put off by the fact that the subjects seem difficult, the OU is really good at making sure you understand everything. But remember to allow 12 hours a week for study or you will get very stressed.

Game making career/education?

We Answered:

There's actually quite a few that you're forgetting. Games need publicity departments, studios need legal departments, there are producers, accountants, Quality assurance people, Actors, etc. etc.

For the sake of career options, I would suggest picking something you could do/would enjoy doing, even if it weren't in gaming. If you're a programmer, you can work on productivity software, etc. If you're an artist, then you can do graphic design or something. You should be looking more into what you want to do then what necessarily will end with you working on a game. Mold your career out of your interests, not your interests out of your career.
