Graduate Certificate In Career Development

Jimmie Said:

Working while getting a GIS certificate?

We Answered:

I would call local governments in your area, talk to GIS administrators, and see if they take interns. Also, if you have any type of regional planning commissions or agencies, give them a call too. You REALLY need to start making GIS contacts in your region if you are wanting to find a GIS job. The best thing I ever did was being aggressive while looking for internships in college. I ended up with great contacts that I still use 10yrs later, and my last internship ended up turning into a full time job!
The GIS world seems huge, but once you get your foot in the door, you'll realize it's a small world. Everyone seems to know everyone.

What career should a I pursue?

We Answered:

First you shouldn't always go for a job just because of the money. I think if you're into art you could get your bachelors degree at a really great art school (Mass. College of Art, NYU, Rhode Island School of Design, etc.) and you can make great contacts when you intern. Also, as far as the business route goes you can basically go into any division of business, again it all depends on your contacts. Just so you know a Bachelor's degree would be most beneficial in the art or business field. As far as your writter interst goes you'd be able to persure a degree in journalism. Don't forget you can always as your guidance counselor at your school. after all that is what they are there for!
