Human Development Jobs

Rafael Said:

What kind of jobs are there for a degree in human development or psychology?

We Answered:

The low paying kind. Unless you are going to pursue a Master's or Doctorate degree any job at the BA level is long hours and low pay. For example you could be a Social work, on call 24 hours a day, over worked with 20 families making 35k. You can work in mental health institutions, but you better like everything you can get, because their is no choosing.
If you like giving advice you probably want to work with high functioning people, and Psychology jobs are desperate for people with mental health issues. Your better off becoming a Life Coach if you want to help people.
Now don't get me wrong I love Psychology, I read Freud, Jung, Skinner, I understand it with simplicity. However what you learn and what you do for work often don't go hand in hand.
To this day I regret getting a Psych degree, and there is a saying 50% of people with a BA in psych don't work in the field of Psychology (that should be a huge hint).

Ruth Said:

I have a degree in Human Resources Development. What are some of the possible jobs I will have a chance at?

We Answered:

The obvious choice is to go into Human Resources. People going into this function either become specialized in a specific area, such as Recruiting, Compensation, Benefits, Employee Relations, Labor Relations, Training or Organization Development, or they become generalists with responsibility for all of these functions. Whether a specialist or a generalist, the career paths have several levels beginning with basic administration and leading to management positions up to and including the Vice President level.

The best candidates for Human Resources combine their specialized educational background in Human Resources with extensive training in business to best support the organization.

Good luck in your choice.

What GOOD jobs are there for a degree in human development?

We Answered:

Talk to your department head about the usefulness of the degree. Ideally, you'd have done so before committing yourself to the major.

You can also get interviewed for any entry level job. Just have a good excuse for why you interests changed from human development to whatever the new field is.

Thomas Said:

What kind of jobs are there for a HDFS [human development and family studies] major?

We Answered:

It depends upon your interests. Do you like working with a particular age group? Teaching is one job. There is demand for math teachers, technology teachers...children and adults. Gerontology is another area (working with the aged). So to add to your major think what area attracts you, an age group? Speciality area? (age group? specific area of study?) Then decide what to do. Adding computer skills and math skills will add to your marketability. And, being certified as a teacher.
