Importance Of Career Development

Lonnie Said:

What would you tell a friend to convince him or her of the importance of being proactive in one's career devel

We Answered:

I might not tell him...people tend not to listen to lectures, no matter how well-meaning. I might instead invite him to drinks or dinner with a few friends from different companies, either ambitious or not, and then steer the discussion into how they are pursuing their ambitions (or not.)

Learning by illustration typically works pretty well.

Leroy Said:

What would you tell a friend to convince him or her of the importance of being proactive ?

We Answered:

Perhaps give your friend a reality check, along the lines of: if you don't do something to benefit yourself noone will do it for you. Not being proactive in all areas of life can lead to mental illness such as depression and feelings of helplessness. It is impossible to coast along in life and for life to remain in order; it will rapidly escalate in to chaos and substance abuse if effort isn't constantly made to better your situation.

Misty Said:

Albert Said:

What is the importance of being proactive in one's career development and finding an employer that is career

We Answered:

Linda Said:

what would you tell a friend to convince him or her of the importance of being proactive in one's career?

We Answered:

Just tell him that his boss is usually primarily focused on his own career and will tend to make decisions that will enhance his own long term career goals. He, in reality, is only concerned with reaching team goals because the team's success will result in his individual success.

Your friend needs to be aware of this covert dichotomy that is never explicitly discussed.

So, your friend must be proactive in shining the light on his contribution to the team's success or he will remain in the shadows.

Toni Said:

Career Development?

We Answered:

First make sure you really do need to work.

Think about what you want from your life, and how the two of you can compromise. Perhaps part time work would be possible.

Even if you began looking for a job right away, you should be able to arrange things so that you can take some time off before you start. Perhaps a month or so to settle in and relax.

Discuss It!
