Looking to be a police officer?

We Answered:

Most of your 'paperwork' is done on computers now. Reports, booking of prisoners, fingerprints, and all kinds of other things. Almost nothing is handwritten anymore. You also generally have a computer in your car.

SCUBA certification is helpful if you're on a department that has a lake or two in it. We have a couple of SCUBA officers, and they've been very helpful in a variety of ways. Retrieving evidence in a lake, retrieving valuable lost property that someone dropped while on a boat, securing anchors in the sand for fireworks barges, and retrieving parts of boats (for accident reconstruction) are a few of the ways. Unfortunately, they've also had to drag out dead bodies as well.

Cadet officer?

We Answered:

Hi there,

Here is a link that explains Cadet Officer and also has links to the U.S. Army and Air Force. Since there are different avenues you can take, I would suggest contacting either directly and speak with a counselor.

What can I do with my degree?

We Answered:

If I were you I'd be tempted to start at teacher training college. Although your degree is for a very specific type of history, if you've done teaching training you will be able to teach history as a subject in ,most schools. There are very generous grants for it too.

One problem with teaching today is that it's very fashionable to want to go into primary schools but the type of degree that you have lends itself better to a secondary school or college.

I suppose the type of job that you are after is museum management and you'll have to be trawling the net and travelling countrywide for interviews to get one. Your partner has a minimum wage job and should really move to where your new job is, give up his job and find a new job in a new location, alternatively care for your son full time. Once you've got a job you'll be earning more money than him anyway.

Good luck.
