An OD professional would need training competencies since training is a subset of OD.
But a trainer, does not need OD competencies because all many trainers do is memorize a sessiona and present it.

You might try Toastmasters. There is probably a chapter in your neighborhood. It is an economical way of getting public speaking experience.

You go through a series of ten speaking projects that force you to focus upon specifc goals. You then have to present your speach assignment in front of your group. You are timed, graded, and critiqued by your peers and by people who have lots of experience. I found it helpful.
