Erika Said:

What to do about recent job history on application?

We Answered:

An employer should recognize that different methods are used at different schools, but that a good teacher can switch from one to another , or incorporate many teaching methods at a time

Tom Said:

I have a question. I want to be a teacher and I want to know about professional development. I know that?

We Answered:

From my experience, the district/school determines what the priority need is for professional development and then offer opportunities to attend. For example, you might earn two hours of PD for attending a confidentiality training update held at your building after school. Sometimes you can earn professional development hours by attending a pre-approved conference as well. Proof of attendance is required to be turned in to your supervisor or whomever keeps record of such things.

Should a gay elementary teacher come out to coworkers?

We Answered:

You might want to be careful about this.

Legally speaking, teachers have a constitutional right to be openly gay and the Board of Ed cannot fire you.

The Supreme Court handed downt that ruling in 1971 in a case called Gaylord v Tacoma Board of Education

Yes, the openly gay middle school teacher in that case was actually named "Mr Gaylord" - I'm sure he had more than his fair share of homophobic jokes from his more immature male students!

In any case, your school district cannot fire you.

I'm not sure if your AFT or NEA, but I'm sure your union has anti discrimination langauge in your contract.

With that said, your collegues might be very homophobic and they might make your life miserable if you came out of the closet to them. So be careful

Any grants our there to help me attend a national education conference?

We Answered:

Try searching for "continuing education" grants rather than just grant writing. Also, get in touch with your state Department of Education. It is in their best interest to help you find the money to become a better teacher, after all - if they don't have a grant program themselves, they probably know who does.

Cheryl Said:

What is the best way for a teacher to handle this kind of situation? Please read!!?

We Answered:

The best answer I could possibly give would be to consult with the teachers association as well, possibly the school board. This is a tough spot your in and I understand you are at a loss as to what to do but those are the only options you have unless you take legal action.

Rosa Said:

resume question: should i include seminar or workshop that i attended?

We Answered:

It is generally advisable to include seminars and workshops that you attended in your resume if they are RELEVANT to the role that you are seeking. Don't simply put the trainings you undertook for the sake of having one when it is not applicable to the position you are vying for.

You can use the heading "Professional Development" if it caters to your professional growth. Proceed to list the seminar or workshop title then include the place and date it was held.

It is important to note that you must keep your resume length to two pages the most so stick to relevant content.
