As for a programming language, C++ has been for many decades a good bet. Maybe there are more productive constructs in Ruby, Java, C#, Pearl, but you still can do things that are disallowed for those langs.

Besides, in spite what they may say, every new operating system/component model/framework/initiative since the 1990s has been written mostly in C and C++, or at least to be programmed with C and C++.

So, nothing you can't do, nowhere you can't go with C++. As for the productivity part, if under Microsoft operating systems, then you have proprietary idioms that make .NET work with C++. If under other OSes, then you will always find ways to make scripts interact with C++ programmes.

I took my BASIC programming course when I was 8. At the age of 20 I realized I would have been able to have so much more fun with computers if only I had chosen C++. I won't let that happen to my daughter!!!

DeVry has been mostly fluff and very little solid education. Their main goal has always been to get as much as they can in student loans so it will be painless to the student. Only later, the student realizes that the loans are expensive to pay back. It is not preparing you for a software career..

Which do you enjoy? The world will always need accountants. The work is not that exciting but the rules of the game don't change that much. It's a safe choice but it can be a grind. As a software developer you get to design and create things. It's a little more interesting but there's always some new technology/language/architecture that you must overcome. If you can maintain a certain level of proficiency you'll have just as much job security as an accountant and you might enjoy the creative aspect.
