Software Development Careers

Calvin Said:

Is it better to pursue a career in software development or in embedded system?

We Answered:

Embedded system design is half software. Your question would make more sense if you asked, "Should I get into hardware or software?" and the answer would still contain elements of the fact that they are still interconnected. As a software engineer, you won't be able to neglect hardware, and vice versa for a hardware engineer. I myself prefer embedded systems to say PC architecture, because you don't have to deal with microsoft as much, but that's just me.

Career switch from Software Development to Finance?

We Answered:

Once u r done with MBA, apply to the brokerages like Edelweiss, Geojit financial, Anandrathi, icicidirect, sharekhan, indiainfoline, capitalmarket, Religare, and so many others (mostly in metros) for the equity analyst position. You can also join any of the mutual funds. You can't say you will analyse the prospects of IT companies only. It is all part of the learning curve. Best wishes

What path should I take for a career in software development?

We Answered:

Java is good for starting out. It is very easy to learn and its syntax is modeled after C++ making it easy to later pick up C++.

That said, you should study C++ after you have some experience with Java. C++ has many more diverse uses than Java, and would be a good thing to have on your resume. C++ is a bit more complex of a language though, so I wouldn't suggest trying to learn it until you have some of the programming basics down.

One thing I suggest to everyone is to not get your mind locked on one language. Once you've picked up a couple and have some experience with programming, learning additional languages is easy. So keep your mind open to taking opportunities to learn new languages and technologies whenever you can. The longer the list of your abilities, the better chance you have of getting a better paying job.

To get started off, I would suggest taking a computer science course at your local community college. It will give you a good general overview in proper programming technique. While I am a big proponent of self teaching, I have met too many programmers that have attempted to teach themselves the basics of programming and have picked up many bad habits. So at least for starting off, spend a couple hundred bucks and take a college course to teach you the basics.

i want to go for software development career but i'm afraid of indian people!?

We Answered:

What seems to be true is what I heard several years ago. If it can be done over a wire, don't get into that career. I think for you and I, that's a good way to go. I'm concerned, to at least some level, that applies to just about any kind of Engineering too. On the other hand, you might have a chance if you are one of the very best at what you do and can work for yourself. The thing you can offer is quality face to face customer support; but again, all the big money is going to move right past you to India, China or who ever else is the cheap labor of the day. If you're independently wealthy, I would say do what's in your heart. If not, learn something that will feed you. You can always work for someone else if it's available, so let me leave you with these thoughts: Do seriously complete research on the field you are contemplating before jumping, this advice may be worth what you paid for it, there will always be service industry jobs until foreign countries quit loaning us money to buy their products; and if you do work for your self, look for a group of like minded people who's skill set complement your own. Good luck to you.

Florence Said:

Is Software development a low stress career than Systems and networking based careers?

We Answered:

Well it really depends.. depends on the complexity of the design of the software specs. It can be as simple as coding a few lines, to a project that never ends (upgrades, add ons) etc.

From a social view, yes software development don't deal with much people, but they still do - you gotta talk to someone to understand what are their requirements in the software, you gotta make sure what you design fits those requirements, you gotta do quality assurance with the customer so that the end product is what they wanted. etc. You're bound to be in projects that require other team members with time lines, you will have to interact with other people albeit not as much as helpdesk would.

The more stressful and complex the job is, the more money you are bound to make. May I suggest if you worry about stress, to speak to a doctor or a therapist to teach you skills that can help you cope with stress.

How to build career in Application Software Development?

We Answered:

Master your C programming skills.Have a good command over C language concepts. After that go for Java as it has more demand in the industry. If you want to play with database then do a certified course in oracle. Whatever you opt, go for certification like OCP for oracle courses and Java certification from Sun Systems...

All the Best!!!
