Web Developer Careers

Rosa Said:

what is the difference betweeen web design and web developer .. career wise?

We Answered:

Web design is a process of conceptualization, planning, modeling, and execution of electronic media content delivery via Internet in the form of Markup language suitable for interpretation by a web browser and displayed as a Graphical user interface (GUI).

The intent of web design is to create a web site -- a collection of electronic files that reside on a web server/servers and present content and interactive features/interfaces to the end user in form of web pages once requested. Such elements as text, bit-mapped images (GIFs, JPEGs, PNGs), forms can be placed on the page using HTML/XHTML/XML tags. Displaying more complex media (vector graphics, animations, videos, sounds) requires plug-ins such as Flash, QuickTime, Java run-time environment, etc. Plug-ins are also embedded into web page by using HTML/XHTML tags.

Improvements in browsers' compliance with W3C standards prompted a widespread acceptance and usage of XHTML/XML in conjunction with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to position and manipulate web page elements and objects. Latest standards and proposals aim at leading to browsers' ability to deliver a wide variety of media and accessibility options to the client possibly without employing plug-ins.

Typically web pages are classified as static or dynamic.

Static pages don’t change content and layout with every request unless a human (web master/programmer) manually updates the page.

Dynamic pages adapt their content and/or appearance depending on end-user’s input/interaction or changes in the computing environment (user, time, database modifications, etc.) Content can be changed on the client side (end-user's computer) by using client-side scripting languages (JavaScript, JScript, Actionscript, etc.) to alter DOM elements (DHTML). Dynamic content is often compiled on the server utilizing server-side scripting languages (Coldfusion, ASP, JSP, Perl, PHP, Python, etc.). Both approaches are usually used in complex applications.

With growing specialization within communication design and information technology fields, there is a strong tendency to draw a clear line between web design specifically for web pages and web development for the overall logistics of all web-based services.

Thelma Said:

What is the difference between a person with a career in Web Design, web maintenance, and a web developer. ?

We Answered:

A web developer tends to write code, for something like Amazon or whatever where it is doing a lot more than just displaying a basic page. A Web Designer tends to make simple pages like someone's personal homepage or whatnot, and they usually make the design as well. Web maintenance is pretty lowly, they just make sure things keep working and fix silly bugs. It's what they make you do before they let you do real work.

Lori Said:

How will be web designer and web developer career in future ?

We Answered:

It's a good career choice (if I understood your question correctly) and it's what I trained as. I'm now working as a network manager for a hotel chain. I get paid to sit around on Yahoo! Answers.

Jill Said:

Should I choose a career in web designer/developer?

We Answered:

Employers don't really care about degrees or educational certifications when it comes to web & IT jobs. They care about portfolios and work product. Of course, if you go through a web development school, it would give you a chance to assemble some samples of your work. But some people would rather skip the tuition cost and just teach themselves and create websites and programming samples. Whatever works best for you!

Good luck!

Betty Said:

What type of person would be suitable for a Web Design/Developer career?

We Answered:

1) communicative & capable to capture requirements well
2) results oriented
3) though web design & development are two different worlds but there are alot of people who work in both , if you are working on big project you should consider two roles pure web designer & pure developer.

Kelly Said:

At 46 Should I change my career to Web Developer or Adminstrator?

We Answered:

If you know linux, then go become an linux administrator. Web Developers need to be familiar with several web development languages as well as databases (HTML is very old and nowadays, less frequently used). And unless you plan on sticking with your current job, you would better take any hotel management skills you have and become an admin. People who work in the hospitality management field are suitable for administration roles. Just make sure you understand the 'division' of the administrative technology before you apply.
