Web Development Career Path

Samantha Said:

Will a degree in Graphic Design lead the path to a career in Web Design?

We Answered:

What exactly do you want to do in Web Design (front-end, back-end, etc.)?

It probably depends on the school/program you choose, but I don't think a degree in Graphic Design will help all that much in finding a job in Web Design.

Graphic Design and Web Design are not the same thing although there will be areas that overlap. I got a degree in G.D. and was only required to take 2 web related classes, which is definitely not enough to learn W.D. You will more than likely not learn any coding languages if you pursue a degree in G.D.

I work as a Graphic Designer at a marketing company and I do get to design the look of websites, but I don't code anything so in that regards you might be able to find a Web Design related job doing more front-end stuff.

Also, in most of the places I've worked the Web Designers or Developers don't really use Web Design programs like Dreamweaver to create websites. They or a Graphic Designer design the layouts in Photoshop and then they code everything themselves.

Good luck!

Billy Said:

What is the difference between web design and web development? Which one makes more money on average?

We Answered:

Web designers make websites like Facebook appealing, eye-catching, and graphically functional.
Web developers make websites like Facebook work.

I daresay the developers are paid more because they are computer programmers, not just graphic designers on Macs. (And no, having a Mac isn't required; it's cheaper but not as elitist to have a PC).

Tyler Said:

Flash or Web development? Which is the better career path?

We Answered:

Neither is necessarily better. It depends which you prefer. You can make a living at either.
