Radio/TV stations & Web Development Jobs/Careers?

We Answered:

I'd say go for it, but don't be shocked by the low pay and the long hours when your first start out. You may also be working weekends, holidays, or overnights. You also can be fired for most any reason...from being 'smarter' than your boss, to blowing a big posting, to trying to hit on the receptionist. I've also heard, and seen people canned for everthing from pronouncing something wrong on the air, to rival stations hiring someone away from a station...after getting them fired or blackballed. It is a cutthroat business.

If you really want to get a good idea, get cleaned up, and set an appointment to check out a tv or radio station. Ask the receptionist, or HR person if there is someone who could give you a tour. Broadcasting or Journalism may have 'new media' but still has 'old school rules'...meaning, you pay your dues, regardless of race, color or creed.

It 'seems' easy...until you have to do it. Then, you get amazed at how much coordination it takes to write, or even cover a news story. Even those in 'new media' have to have the same instincts of regular news folks when they put stuff on line.

However, its something that you have to experience...and, to me, if you are young, you should go for your dreams. If you don't, you'll kick yourself on down the road for not attempting it.

What is the ideal college major for someone pursuing a career in Web Development?

We Answered:

Computer (or Management) Information Systems if offered, if not Computer Science
They offer not only the computer aspect of the web development, but a management and marketing side to it as well.

Charlie Said:

Where/how do I start a web development Career (from)?

We Answered:

My suggestion would be to get web hosting through a company like http://www.GotHosting.org and start with a PHP/MYSQL app. This, of course, can include AJAX, Javascript, HTML etc.

You can feel free to write our support team and they will help you out with any concepts you need instruction on. Also, you can instantly install Joomla (along with several other scripts) with a couple of clicks with the cpanel hosting.

Hope this helps!

Starting a Web Development career at 55? Possible?

We Answered:

You can do so, but there is a fair amount of technology to learn. Study HTML, and page preparation software such as Dreamweaver. Consider taking courses at a local college or junior college.

Web Design/Development/Interactive Careers?

We Answered:

A number of companies were hiring people still in or just out of high school, provided they had a portfolio, demonstrating their capabilities, but as more people move into the field companies are demanding more experience or training.

Currently it best if you have at least an associate degree or some type of certificate and ideally with some graphic design skills or training.

The thing is employers often scramble to find workers capable of implementing the newest technologies. You need to keep up with the latest technologies.

Web designer with with certificate, formal education or experience in information security, for example, are in demand because of the growing need for their skills and services
