Annette Said:

Why didn't she get a scholarship?

We Answered:

Two possibilities:

1) if it is a need-based scholarship, maybe the friend was less able to attend Auburn based on her financial profile.

2) if the scholarship is merit based, assuming that your child had superior scores and grades, maybe there was something in the other person's essay/background that made her more desirable as a student from the admission person's perspective.

Don't blame yourself -- admissions people usually have to choose among a bunch of equally qualified candidates and eventually have to rely on little things to differentiate students.

Nora Said:

cam newtons dad is a real scumbag don't ya think?

We Answered:

Nope. I don't think his dad is a scumbag. The first school to ever offer/give/buy anything for a player started a bad thing that has snowballed out of control. This is becoming more and more common. If someone wants to cash in on it, so be it. That tells me that he was probably offered something by more than one school, or at least he could've gotten money from more than one. The 2 things I think about are: 1) the school should never have offered or followed through with paying for a player, it is their responsibilty to follow the rules. 2) The NCAA sanctions for schools in violation of its rules do not work. If the dad wants to make sure his son is being paid for his talent that the school makes money from, why not? Cam could have a career-ending injury at anytime. He's not guaranteed to go to the NFL. Why not get the most from his talent while you can. This is a product of the schools need to win, winning is most important to them, they deserve this. If they had enough dignity to say no, there wouldn't be a problem.
If I had a son who could play like that, I would not take money. I would want him to go to college for the education first, football second. But, I don't think Cam's dad is any more of a scumbag than any talent agent.

Lynn Said:

Why didn't she get a scholarship offer?

We Answered:

I would write a letter to the scholarship members and urge them to review their decision making processes.

Encourage her to become an unwed mother. The government will give her free Medicare, childcare, education, rent, food stamps and transportation allowance.

Good, middle-class people are always falling through the cracks.

If your daughter is that smart, she'll figure out how to get the money.
