Harvey Said:

For a career in the social services (not social work) would taking calculus then statistics be beneficial?

We Answered:

taking calculus then statistics would be beneficial no matter what you do. If nothing else, it trains your mind.

Social Services Career ?

We Answered:

You could ask at a local Connexions office, Jobcentre, college or university. You could do an NVQ in Social Care, an apprenticeship or a young apprenticeship if you are 14-16.
There are apprenticeships in Health, Public Services and Care with the National Apprenticeship Service, you can search for local apprenticeship vacancies on the site.

Veronica Said:

Would you consider a career in the Social Services?

We Answered:

It depends in what section. I chose to work in care homes for the elderly thirteen years ago, and became a nursing home manager in 2004 with an attractive base salary along with benefits.
It's sad to say, but some parts of the Social Services are more attractive than others - look at how the press deals with people who deal with child care. They almost criminalise them, with the workers not knowing which way to turn. Does it not depend on the way certain councils care for children/adults?
It's a shame that councils like Lambeth will always catch the bullets from the worst sections of the press, with workers not only wary of bad parents, but the papers who act almost criminal themselves by acting like judge and juries.
