How can you find out what interest you/what you want to do for a career without a test?We Answered:
This is a great question for anyone regardless of their age. I think that career test do not often provide you with good accurate information regarding things that touch you emotionally. It is through our emotional intelligence that we learn of our passions and what really intrigues us or encourages us to pursue a profession. I think the best way to really look at all your options (and trust me there are more then we can even imagine) is to do some footwork and become very resourceful by exploring your options through many different avenues. Read the classifieds, that is always an easy one, but that isn't helpful as far as giving you some insight as to what type of jobs might be in demand in the future. The government put out information regarding the fastest growing occupations and you can Google that and take a look at that list, but it is not always up to date, nor is it that accurate as far as its future predictions go. Keep in mind that everything is cyclical. Meaning, that all careers will go through cycles of supply not meeting demand and supply exceeding demand. For that very reason, it is important to really choose something you love. Why? Because if you love what you do, you will do it well and your services will be in demand regardless of the supply and demand issues. If you do it for the money, then be prepared to possibly get stuck in a job you hate or become tied to because you have reached a certain level of income that you have come to rely on and now you have the "golden hand cuffs" on!Start by taking a self assessment of some of the things you enjoy doing and think about comments and compliments people have given you regarding any of your strengths, talents, etc. For example, where do your interest lye in school? Are you intrigued by the sciences or are you more or an artsier person? That will at least help set you in a direction to start looking for careers that currently exist. Put together a list of occupations you would like to explore, do a bit (not a great deal, just enough to ask educated questions) of research. Then start asking around, do you know of anyone who is in this profession? Do your parents or their friends, colleagues, etc. know of anyone? Do your teachers, coaches, neighbors, friends, relatives, distant relatives know of anyone who is in the profession? Once you find that person ask if you could contact them directly and explain your reasons for wanting to do so. Have your questions well prepared a head of time and well thought out. If a person senses your interest and/or enthusiasm in something they do for a living, they will be more than happy to share. From there, you should not hesitate to request an opportunity to "shadow" with them for the day. I have been in the health care industry for 20+ years and we have allowed numerous students of all ages shadow many of our professionals. Professionals with passion, love to share their occupation with anyone who shows interest. Also, never hesitate to ask people (when the opportunity presents itself) how they came about choosing their career path. You will be surprised at the variety of answers you will receive and you will be even more surprised when you find out how many really just "happened" into it while pursuing another path. I personally would not waste my time on the career tests. There are some, like the Meijers Briggs test that are helpful in offering you some insight on your personality which is always fun to have. However, if you just listen to your heart, keep an open mind and ask a lot of questions every chance you get, you will undoubtedly be exposed to many fascinating careers and will be more likely to land in one that really fulfills you! Also, remember the pace in which technology moves now days, there are future occupations that don't even exist at the present time but will be options for you after you complete your education, training or whatever path you choose to get to the career you seek! Good luck to you, please keep me posted, I am always fascinated and intrigued to hear how people land in careers that they love and pursue with great passion! Take care!
