Career Service International

Melinda Said:

What are career options for someone interested in international relations?

We Answered:

you might be able to get a job with an american company that does business in parts of the world where your language skills would be useful. anywhere that french is the main language would be a possibility but you will need strong language skills and a high overall grade point would be beneficial as well.

International Service Organizations?

We Answered:

All I can think of are non-profit organizations. It's weird because I'm looking into doing the same thing (my uncle was in the first/second Peace Corps assignment back in the 60s and convinced me long ago). When I took one of those career assessment tests they give you in high school, it suggested working for an NPO, but there weren't many other things similar to it. I plan on studying Peace and Social Justice Studies in college.

I know someone who created a foundation for Russian orphans and regularly travels back and forth from Europe. In Ann Arbor, there's a business called Ten Thousand Villages which specializes in selling products from craftsmen in third world countries here in the US and giving the workers 100% of the profit (there are a few companies that actually do this to help struggling economies.) I also know there are doctors/health workers whom have their own organizations that they work for and travel overseas to help poor villagers. There are a million things you can do if you dig around enough. There are also several pay-to-volunteer organizations like volunteeradventures.com, globeaware.org, globalvolunteers.org and the American Hiking Society at americanhiking.org (these aren't actual career but multi-week "volunteer vacations").

I guess you could always work for the United Nations or the World Health Organization. If you search around their websites, you'll find something. And there are always missionary trips in churches.

Decide specifically how you'd like to help (the economy, public health, the environment, HIV/AIDS prevention, educational causes, whatever) and then find or create an organization that'll let you do that. Good luck!
