Career Services Building

Stephen Said:

I am an A-level to HNC building services engineering student (Electrical)?

We Answered:

2 routes you can go down to use your HNC.

It can be used as a stepping stone to a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the electrical background will be good. Depending on your A levels you might have to do a foundation year, but going from experience, I think the HNC or its contents would have been very useful for a degree.

Or you can go into work.
Many electrical installation firms would love to take on an apprentice who has the HNC (you could also look at C&G 2391) - they won't have to pay for you to do it! Talk to your class mates and see if any of their firms want apprentices, the HNC will be a good thing to put on your CV.

A third option is again working. A lot of bigger electrical contracting firms have a 'backroom' staff providing a design and verification back up for the electricians - again that is something to look at, if you could pick up some CAD there are opportunities there too.

There are prospects on graduation for you, stick with it, talk to the class mates and see who is recruiting

What is an estimated good price to charge for building a website?

We Answered:

From 10$ to unlimited amount!
Pricing a website is extremely difficult: you need first to establish detailed specifications. Each part of the spec can then be quoted.
On average (World-Wide):
Static sites (HTML-CSS): 10-15$/page
Semi-static sites HTML-CSS-Javascript: 25-30$/page
Dynamically generated sites (server-side scripts): from 500$
Interactive sites: from 1200$
Small e-commerce (catalogue, CMS, payment gateway): from 1500$
Fully blown interactive application: from 3000$
A concert lighting company would be an e-commerce and would require a fair bit of work, probably above your head, as it would intail a lot of server-side scripts, database and more. If it were to show plans and automated quotes, it would become a fully blown application.

Building/Construction career?

We Answered:

At least begin your education studying Civil Engineering. Civil engineers design things. These might be roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, or water supply and sewage systems. They must consider many factors in their designs, from the costs to making sure the structure will stay intact during bad weather. This is one of the oldest types of engineering.

Many civil engineers manage people and projects. A civil engineer may oversee a construction site or be a city engineer. Others may work in design, construction, research, and teaching. There are many specialties within civil engineering, such as structural, construction, environment, and transportation.

Civil engineers usually work in areas where there is lots of manufacturing and businesses. Often they work at construction sites. Sometimes they work in places that are far away from cities. Most engineers work at least 40 hours per week. Some are required to travel.

Civil engineering is usually divided into particular specialties, such as construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, land development, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, or environmental engineering.
