Chances of getting into.....?

We Answered:

Thank you for removing your other funky formatted question (same as this one).

Your descriptions give you a nice resume. Lots of things determine if you get into a school. Your resume is only one of those. For those schools you've likely passed their first quality check.

Look at the schools' applications. Many schools have essay requirements. Learn to write your own...don't count on others to edit or write them for you. What is important to these schools? Some admissions officers complain that kids do community service (or take trips to developing nations) for the sole purpose of padding their application. They'd be much more impressed to see development over time.

Example: In 7th grade you began working with inner city school students on their reading. In 8th grade you did the same. In 9th grade you took a trip to Haiti to rebuild roofs on houses. You discovered that the Haitians had a lack of libraries. While you continued your work with inner city schools in 10th grade, you began a book drive to collect books for the Haitians you met last year. You earned your Eagle Scout rank and your Eagle project was building a library for the Haitain community. Because of your efforts, the village literacy rate for 12 year olds has gone from 10% to 65%.

That shows progression and a passion for a problem.

The service hours you mentioned can be picking up litter on a roadside or planting flowers at a nursing home. these pale in comparison to someone who has found a calling to service.

Which person do you think Columbia would offer admission to?

For all you experienced writers out there! What do you think of my short story?

We Answered:

"Publisher, after publisher he had no luck with this any book, especially trial and error"
Doesn't make sense and shouldn't 'Trial and Error' be capitalised?
Also, the story seems to be fairly impersonal, as if you are stating facts, try something other than 'this happened and then this happened and she looked like this.'
For example, "Her stature was small only about 5’0 and she tipped the scales and 90lbs"
Try instead, "Her small stature caused Mary to underestimate her at first, she was only 5'0 and 90lbs. But she didn't let tininess get to her."
Personalise it, read lots more and try to make it less stating what happens and more 'embellished with the thin tendrils of a large vocabulary and overactive imagination'.

You also have a few spelling and grammatical mistakes...

You are probably qualified to get into all of these schools. The typical student getting into a top ten university in the US has a 3.8 unweighted GPA with a weighted GPA higher than 4.0. This means that the average successful applicant at Columbia has a slightly higher GPA than you do. Your GPA is probably about average for Georgetown and NYU -- so I like your chances there.

If you actually are at the best HS in US, then you have an additional problem at Columbia. Many of your classmates are probably applying to Ivy League schools. Columbia will be less likely to take you if they have already accepted several of your classmates.

There is one final problem for you regarding Columbia. They do not have an undergraduate business school -- so do not offer finance as a major. The University of Pennsylvania and Cornell are the only Ivy League schools that offer undergraduate degrees in business.

The best programs for finance on the undergraduate level are:

1. Wharton (University of Pennsylvania)
2. Sloan (MIT)
3. Haas (UC-Berkeley)
4. Ross (University of Michigan)
5. McInryte (University of Virginia)
6. Stern (NYU)

There is never enough time is there?

We Answered:

People are able to balance school, extracurricular activities, and love at the same time.... I have many friends that have serious girlfriends.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be yourself, study hard, land your dream career, and everything will fall into place... Including a guy.

Good luck
