Yolanda Said:

Would you want to work in financial services at this time?

We Answered:

Assuming we believe the finance industry will rebound over the next decade (which I think it will), being in the industry can be lucrative.

I think selling equities can be rewarding as people start dumping their money in the stock market again (again, assumption).

I'm currently trying to get a job in alternative investments, like commodities -- it's tough. Employer's aren't even returning my follow-up calls after dropping off my resume/cover letter. But I'm fresh out of college w/ limited experience.

Good luck

Does age discrimination exist in the financial services sector?

We Answered:

More than likely you will. I'm 41 and was with a company for five years. One year everyone in the accounting dept. quit except me. I did it all billing, A/P, credit checks, deposits, A/R etc. Then the owner hired a new COO who wanted only his people there. So he hired a lady who had no accounting experience and she proceeded to get her brother into the accounting dept. Well he's all of 22 and the company his paying for him to go to school. One day he told me that the company was setting it up for him to replace the controller one day. They made the same offer to me to go to school. But with child support and knowing it was a dead end job I began looking elsewhere. Anyway to make a long story short I was let go for following their instructions. But I really was let go because of my age. Sorry! P.S. Its illegal to age discriminate also. Its on the books. Good luck!

Lisa Said:

what do you think of financial services as an industry?

We Answered:

People view the financial services industry as inscrutable and run by people with no morals. The industry is saturated with qualified and non-qualified advice, and people need someone who is willing to prove themselves trustworthy. Your career at JPMorgan would be best served if you can go along with this way of thinking, and service your clients to death. The industry is very competitive, and its a make your numbers or die career, but the only people who last in this business are the people who can balance this with strong integrity and an unwillingness to sell out for a profit.

Carolyn Said:

What are my chances of landing a good entry level job in the financial services industry?

We Answered:

I feel, you can enter as a junior accountant or analyst. Work hard, show your talent, be honest, impress your management. Certainly your talent is recognised. Even if you have done internships abroad, it is ultimately your knowledge about the subject that matters. Good luck.
