Careers Guidance Service

Jim Said:

Should I be worried that my guidance counselor signed me up for the Selective Service System?

We Answered:

She should not have done that. She should have told you that you needed to do it, but not actually done it herself.

Males in the US who turn 18 are required to register for Selective Service but you do NOT have to go into the military. However, now that they have your name, you might start receiving mail from them. If you are not interested, just toss it.

Beth Said:

Please review for grammatical errors and analyze for modification?

We Answered:

I'd just fix the last few sentences.

"While people explore various subjects through community service activities, the time spent there does not provide them with instructional guidance in their career choice, unlike service learning. Although both benefit the community, service learning also benefits the individual."

Kristina Said:

Why do other service component members get smart when replying to Army Officer Branch questions?

We Answered:

It is called inter-service rivalry and you need to get used to it. This is the wrong place for career advice. go to Military.com.

Personally I think that either armor or artillery is the way to go. Heavy lean to artillery the Queen of Battle.

Edit: Kiss my shiny white azz. US Army ROTC grad 1975 I have been there and done the time so, Why don't you quit insulting people?

If you want to work with networking, I would recommend pursuing Cisco certifications. Cisco certifications are held in high esteem withing the networking field. One nice thing about Cisco is that they offer certifications at five different levels depending on experience and the level of work involved in a professionals job.

The first step is to get a solid foundation in network topics and principles. For this, you can study for and pass either CompTIA's Network+ or the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT) exams. Both of these give you a good set of fundamentals. The Network+ exam is vendor neutral and covers more topics with a basic understanding while the CCENT is Cisco specific and goes into more details on less topics.

Once you have that, you should pursue an associate level Cisco certification. There are basically two paths you can go: either implementation or design. The implementation track would be the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) while the design track would be the Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA).

The CCNA is more geared for the entry network administrators who will be configuring routers and switches for small networks, while the CCDA is more geared for individuals who will be designing networks. The CCDA consists of a single test called the 640-863 DESGN. The CCNA can either be taken in a single test (640-802) or in two tests (640-816 and 640-822). One nice thing about the CCNA is that if you chose to get the CCENT, you have already completed the 640-822 exam and would only have to pass the 640-816 exam.

Thinking further ahead, if you want to move up in the networking field (senior network admin, senior network engineer, lead of network team, etc.) you should consider pursuing the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP). The CCNP consists of three exams (SWITCH, ROUTE and TSHOOT) while validate the ability to design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot medium and large enterprise networks.

As always, and important thing to remember with certifications is that without relevant experience, they don't mean anything. An individual who has a CCNA but has never worked ANY networking at all is no more valuable than an individual without a CCNA. Certifications exist to validate experience and knowledge, not take the place of it. Anyone can study for pass a test, but having experience to back it up makes all the difference.

I'm presently writing an essay about career guidance and what benefits it gives..?

We Answered:

Go for it!

As a careers teacher I found that a majority of students had no idea at all of careers available, how to achieve them, how to decide what alternatives they were suitable to them and how to choose between these.

So, can you answer the above for yourselves?

Career guidance helps youth to make good choices for themselves. By making good choices, everyone benefits as everyone is in the career they are most suited for wrt likes, abilities and interests. Education costs are reduced as people find it easier to do well in courses they study, you should not have oversupplies in some careers and under supplies in others.

Have fun!

Becoming an Registered Nurse?

We Answered:

You can visit the academic advisers of a few different nursing schools in your area. Also, I know that there are hospitals in New Jersey that offer a diploma program (I used to live in NJ).

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is not a bad idea. It would allow you to see how well you can handle the dirty work before committing to nursing school.

Best of luck.
