A lot of this depends on the boss. Some bosses use their assistants as just that - assistants. They have decision-making authority, they may have some budget responsibility, the run meetings with little supervision, etc.

Other bosses favor the "administrative" part of the title - filing, scheduling meetings, reviewing and sorting snail mail/email, screening phone calls, making travel arrangements.

It is a career path that can get you a lot of exposure to top management, but it is not a path that provides for a lot of advancement - once you've been exec assistant to a sr. VP or company president, where else can you move up to?

I would say that with an 8 year experience in customer relations, now to venture into software programming would be like going back 8 years in your career profile, for the basic reason that the two are completely unrelated fields and to become a trained software programmer, you will need to devote minimum year to acquiring the required skills. Plus, there aren't any transferable skills apart from soft skills that you will be able to utilise in the new career.

Therefore, if you weigh the pros and cons of shifting, once you commit yourself to the new career option, you will be treated as a fresher, and your eight years' of experience will not be counted. Is that a price you are ready to pay at this stage? That's a question you will have to ask yourself.

I will suggest that you look out for jobs that offer slight deviations from your current profile. Yes, no harm supplementing your profile with courses in your free time to fuel your interests.

Your project might turn out to be more interesting if you could interview an executive in your city or town. Many people in business are happy to talk to students about their business. Since you don't say where you live, you just might want to look in the yellow pages for a locally-owned business and ask to talk to one of the owners.
HR people don't usually know what upper-level executives do on a daily basis.
