Agnes Said:

Do you think I could get into Harvard University if I applied?

We Answered:

You would not be admitted to Harvard. Many applicants with 4.0 GPAs and 2400 SAT scores are not admitted, so please do not feel badly about it. There are hundreds of colleges in the US where students receive fine educations.

Lydia Said:

Do you think I am eligible to qualify as a student of Harvard University with this current status?

We Answered:

There's pretty much no way to predict whether you'll get into Harvard or not. You didn't mention any of your scores (SAT, ACT, AP), which are all important factors in admissions. I assume that your GPA is a weighted one; your unweighted GPA is important, since weighted GPA doesn't exist in college. You don't really have that many extracurriculars, but the leadership parts are good.

I know several people who applied to Harvard - several of them volunteered for political campaigns, most were National Merit Finalists, a few had major leadership positions, all were IB diploma candidates, and all had ACT scores of 34 or higher. Only one was admitted.

Make sure that you're applying to other schools - check out collegeboard.com and use the MatchMaker if you can't think of any.

Sorry for the downer, but it's the reality of college admissions ...

Can I Get Into Harvard University? Mutual Funds Manager?

We Answered:

1. An honors student takes honors and advanced (AP, IB) classes in high school. An honors student in college completed a senior thesis. Some colleges also have honors classes, but not the top schools - they're all advanced classes.

2. There's no formula for getting into a top school - they turn down thousands of 4.0 students, perfect SAT scorers, and valedictorians every year. Get high grades and test scores, and then find a way to stand out from everyone else with high grades and test scores.

3. Everyone has a chance, but almost no one has a good chance. They take 7% of applicants.

4. Get as high a score as possible. There are three sections - math, reading, and writing.

5. Harvard and other top schools ask for at least three SAT II tests in addition to the SAT. Not every state has state tests, and I've never heard of a college asking for the results - those are mostly just for graduation purposes.
