Human Services Career

Julia Said:

What should my answer be if I want to pursue a career in Human Services (Social Work)?

We Answered:

If the scholarship is based on how the Latino community will benefit from your education, I would stress that you plan to use your education to work in the Latino community. I would be specific about what type of social work interests you, whether it is helping with housing, education, childcare issues, etc.

If you are bi-lingual, that's a strong point and I'd mention that.

Basically, I think they are looking to make sure that if they give someone a subsidized education, that it will be used in the community. So, look around the community and see what needs there are, and which ones you are interested in helping to work on.

I would also stress that you are culturally aware and sensitive to your clients' cultural practices and considerations.

Best of luck!

You can get a job starting in a human service dept. at different companies, dealing with employees from that company, anything from answering employees questions about insurance to giving interviews to new people. Lester Said:

I want a career in human services. I will get my AAS degree in June 07. How do I market myself now?

We Answered:

Well, you are destined for either a government/bureaucracy program or a non-profit organization, most likely. Possibly something cool like Yahoo for Good, which is the public service arm of Yahoo. But in general, you will be working for a non-profit at best. So now is the time to do volunteer work that gets as close as possible to the paid job you would like to have.

Service organizations tend to specialize in the type of client or in the type of problem the client presents. So, for example, you might work with children or senior citizens, the poor or the disabled. Or you might work for an organization like a library or database, which attempts to serve a variety of people but in a fairly narrowly defined way.

Which classes have you liked the best? What are your hobbies and interests? While you are a volunteer, you still need to match up with the organization to some extent, or you will be wasting your time stuffing envelopes or doing fund-raising. So decide what organization you would most like to work for, and volunteer for them. If they like you, once you get your degree, you will have a foot in the door for a salaried position.

Good luck and God bless!

Expain what type of jobs and/or career human services person does.?

We Answered:

Human Services has to do with working in a field that offers services to the community. A good example is a Social Worker. They work with people in the community, helping to offer services that people might need. These people needing services might be uneducated, of low income, etc. As you can imagine, these are generally government jobs and can be quite stressful. If you do a google search for "human services jobs" you should be able to find websites with lots of good information. Hope this helps!
