Tom Said:

Is U.S. Postal Service a good career move?

We Answered:

My mother has been a USPS rural letter carrier for over 25 years now. When considering aking this position, your fiance' should take into account a few things... the heat, the long hours, and although there certainly is the potential for raises- the opposite is also true. They can re-evealuate your route at any time, add to/ take from/or change it, and give you a pay cut- even though you may be doing a great job! And will the post office be providing him a vehicle? They don't here, so you'd either have to purchase a vehicle with the steering wheel on the passenger side, or do as my mom does- sits in the passenger seat, and reaches her arm and leg across the seat to drive. (can't be too comfortable, but she's great at it, let me tell you.)

How does one go about applying for the Post Office.. Experienced postal workers answer my question please..?

We Answered:

Periodically, they have a test that a zillion people will probably show up for. Call the number for the time and place of one near you.

You might also look into buying a packet that they sell that tells you everything you need to know, what to expect, and has practice tests. It is very helpful, especially the practice portion because a LOT of people take the test and there are only so many openings. The highest scores, obviously, get hired first. Others that pass but aren't as high go on a waiting list.
The test isn't difficult, but attention to detail and quickness are important, and that's where the practice comes in. If you don't get hired in the first round, find another job, because the wait is a long one, if they notify you at all.
The requirements are basically the same as for any job. Don't be a convicted felon.

EDIT: One_sultrydiva's post has a link to the practice package I was talking about. It's worth the money if you want the job.

Bob Said:

Can anyone tell me what it is like to be a rural carrier for the postal service?

We Answered:

Being an RCA is one of the toughest jobs in the USPS. RCA's aren't guaranteed hours because its more of a fill in job until a regular route becomes available. Rural carriers also have to provide their own vehicles and provide many of the services that a window clerk would. I would suggest trying to take the City Carrier test because right off the bat you get benefits and some guaranteed hours.

How soon after a postal service interview is someone actually hired?hat would you like to ask?

We Answered:

Number one, please don't have any hopes of a career position. As soon as five day delivery is implemented, all TE's are gone. This is a fact, not trying to soft soap it for you. They will pretty much ask you if you can work 7 days a week, from dawn till dusk and then some. Can you lift up to 70 lbs.? They will check you driving record. Any accidents in the last two years will disqualify you. They will drug test. They want to know when you can start. Just don't be too cocky. Yes sir, or ma'am, will go a long way. Don't be opinionated, they like mindless zombies. Believe me, I have worked for the post office for probably a lot longer than you have been living. I'm giving it to you straight. If you are willing to work real hard, not stop to blow your nose, run like crazy and not have any accidents, you will be fine. Good Luck!

Anyone out there work for the US Postal Service?

We Answered:

My nephew just got hired as a carrier (part time, but with benefits and probably 40+ hours per week most of the time) at something like $19 an hour.

Warren Said:

How do I become a united states postal service mailman or rural carrier?

We Answered:

I took the written test once, a million years ago but didn't get to go back to go for the second half of the test on another day.
Call the post office. Ask them where it is that you go to apply for jobs.
I went to some big building but I don't remember what city, LA or Orange County. They can tell you or give you a number. They have times when the job testing is open. You may have to have your name put on a list and they mail you an application now or when they're testing. You may not take the test and deliver letters next week, but as you said, you want to start. THat's good. All you can do is call post offices to find out where to go and then call them to see when and if they are testing!
Good Luck.
