Should you follow up a resume submission with a phone call?

We Answered:

I agree with the first poster. Allow the deadline to pass and a couple of days for them to look over the information and then call only to ascertain if your application was received. They will notify the winner without any help and asking if you got it is intrusive and negative.

Resume Services- US, UK (websites)?

We Answered:

First let me say there are a couple of things you should be looking for on any resume writers website: Prices are shown in advance (no need for surprises here costs go up to $1500), Sample are displayed to judge quality in advance, the writing on the website is the kind you want to see, and finally there will be no good results without a phone interview. For the obvious reason, that yours needs serious help, not a just a reformat/rewrite.

You should check out RighteousResumes.com the writer there has great reviews on LinkedIn.com & elsewhere. The average fee there is $150 which is fairly cheap. If you have to have the finest money can buy and price is no object try the Resumesage.com a bit over your price range ($300 -- 500) but worth it too.

Need help writing a career objective for resume?

We Answered:

Good question. You don't need an objective statement that sounds like you took it from a book. You need to make the statement about YOU, and YOUR personal accomplishments. I have written up many resumes for different jobs, and I tried focusing my statement on what it was that I wanted to get out of this experience. I did some research just to help me get some type of general idea on how to go about writing this, and I found a website that had tons of information on resume writing specifically. If you want to go check it out, it also gives you a lot of great information on tips for writing the other parts of your resume as well. What the important parts are, what they mean, etc etc.. Just make it about You and what you want to achieve from this. Good luck!!!

Non profit Human Services does not pay, where should I look to make a career move?

We Answered:

I'm sorry that you have experienced so much disappointment. Most of us that have done non-profit work did it, at least in part, because we supported the goals of the group and we received non-monetary compensation and joy from that. Also, when we left we lost almost all our friends because we were no longer a part of that close knit group of teammates.

I worked for one for 8 years. So I would say that you need to remember that when you leave that will be behind you - you may lose some intangibles that are important to you. Also, when I left the one I was in I suddenly discovered a world of mean and difficult fellow employees that I never knew existed out there. You see in the non-profit it was like we were all a team that pulled toward the same goals. Once in the real employment world I discovered that was not always true. Some employees were wonderful. Others would stab you in the back if that meant they could get your job. So you need to brace yourself for that.

The good news is it sounds like you have experience, positive references and a degree. Also, having a job makes it easier to find one so that is a plus. I would move carefully and be sure this is really what you want to do.

What should I put as a career objective in my resume?

We Answered:

In my opinion, a resume is gonna be for life. So just spend $20 and get a professional resume instead of figuring out how to do it on yer own. I suggest HelpVilla.com
