Is sociology (first degree) useless if I want a career in the public sector?

We Answered:

Have a look on the ucas site.

http://www.ucas.ac.uk/

Do a course search and there are details of what graduates did after they qualified.

Also have a look at this site

http://www.thegooduniversityguide.org.uk…

At university you will have the freedom and opportunity to develop all kinds and skills that you are not likely to develop outside. You will mix with a very diverse group of people and gain a lot of insight.

Many industries will take on any graduate as a trainee. For example every industry needs researchers. Accountancy and banking is open to anyone who can demonstrate numeracy. Teaching is open to all.

A lot of public sector work has now been privatised. So you do not have to work in the public sector , no matter what your field of interest is.

What career should I choose?!?

We Answered:

Do a job you enjoy going to each and every day. Never pick a career just because of the pay. If it doesn't fit your personality you be miserable and no amount of money will ever make any better. If you love what you do you find ways to make it rewarding.

Challenging and enjoyable do not have be mutually exclusive. Fashion based jobs could use a lot more people that are human rights minded. Given the poor track record of that industry and how it's exploited workers in third world countries, you could be on the leading edge of creating humane fashion.

MBA program between AGSM - by UNSW and MBS - by Uni of Melb?

We Answered:

Have a good look at the subjects - even looking at which textbooks they will be using. Try to get a look at the books.

What does your husband say about his experience?

Forget about prestige name Uni's. "I'll employ this person because they came from blah, blah....".

Once you finish your degree what can you offer an employer? They should not be swayed by which place you got your degree from. How can you help make a profit for that company in an international playing field?

Your personal preferences seem to be swayed by environmental asthetics rather that job searching. I'd like to go to the tropics of Hawaii...... but not practical.

Substance first, dreams will follow.

Some advice for what I should do now that I have finished uni with a useless degree?

We Answered:

Here's a link. One of my old school friends who took sociology as her degree subject has a most interesting and rewarding job in an advice centre. http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/Sociology.…

I would have thought that History as a subject was more dead-end in terms of a career than Sociology. What you should be going for is some vocational training rather than another academic subject.

College/Uni courses for a career orientated toward helping others?

We Answered:

Hello,

Don't expect spoon feeding at every point in life. You need to help yourself, only you know what interests you, and internet is at your help. OM

I do NOT recommend spending money on higher education in UK, USA etc., because education in Norway, Sweden and Finland is completely FREE for Indian students! These universities have global ranking better than IIT, IISc and require no entrance tests to be cleared too, so you save tension of IIT-JEE or CAT for MTech/MBA, or GRE, GMAT, etc.

For studying abroad, the best country should be the one which is developed country + focuses on research + education + health etc. I believe Norway is the best for study, because Norway Universities are among the best in world (ever heard Nobel Prize, its given by Norway Universities). Plus PhD people get salary of 3000-4000 Euro per month as well.

So this would save you from spending lots of hard earned money of your parents or getting trapped with Education Loan. Just compare it with $ 50000 tuition fee required to do masters in Australia. So you save a lot to save!

Again, do check the official websites of these 3 countries, like for Norway the site is http://www.studyinnorway.no search in google for rest two. Also, studies in Europe are way too easy as compared to India. For example, exam answer sheet is of 4 pages only, instead of 32 pages. Professors expect you to write as briefly as possible, and ask 4 question in each exam only.

Start searching for courses of your interest and apply ASAP, deadlines are very near. Best of luck! God bless you. Now start acting without delay ;) [ I'm NOT an agent, I've just free time in holiday season. Agents in India don't tell this secret of free education, I missed it and want that you at least avail this opportunity. ]
