What should I be when I 'grow up'?

We Answered:

I recommend thinking of what you like to do which you stated was animals and humans. I then say that one should find a major where they can incorporate their interests. With animals and humans there are countless majors to explore.

Study what interests you, get the degree in it, and then get a job that revolves around your interests. I recommend step by step. We all grew up with "what do you want to be when you grow up?" and let's say you are set on being a doctor and have that frame of mind but once school starts yo discover that you don't like science or math at all. Then some still continue to suffer through because they thought a doctor is what they wanted.

Find a major that an incorporate your interests. I'd recommend searching through majors and use www.princetonreview.com. Also on major pages they tell you some jobs that people who major in that get and more info about that job such as what it is salary, and what to expect when you start off, 5 years afterword, and 10 years down the road.

Good luck!

Fortunately, you have plenty of time to decide! I'm a sophomore in COLLEGE and I'm really still not sure what I want to do. Actually, I don't really know what I want to major in, either, just yet. Too many things I'm interested in...not enough focus.

I think you're definitely off to a good start, ruling out what you DON'T want to do. That's good that you've figured out that blood is not your thing so medicine would not be a good choice. That's good that you've figured out that you don't want to be a journalist. And frankly, it's kind of good that you see being an author as not necessarily realistic. Being an author is a lot like being an artist, musician, or actor: what you do is beautiful, but the success in the profession has mostly to do with getting noticed, and that's not a matter of skill as much as it is a matter of luck.

Taking a free online aptitude test could be helpful, in terms of guiding you in a certain direction, but keep in mind that there are a limited number of results on those tests, while there are an unlimited number of kinds of jobs in the world, so it might not be significantly useful to you.

I think you should practice your writing in high school and look at colleges with good writing programs (Kenyon, Iowa, etc.), as well as colleges that seem to be a good "match" for you in other ways, and you'll find as time goes on that eliminating what you don't want to do can be just as valuable as figuring out what you actually want to do.

For example...I NEVER want to have a traditional desk job...that's going to rule a LOT of things out for me, but it'll leave my better options open.

Good luck to you! Try to keep an open mind and give this some time. You're still very young, and you have so much time ahead of you to narrow down exactly what you want to do...but don't close any big doors just yet! Keep your grades high, take challenging classes, and prepare yourself well for college.
