Career Orientation Test

Willard Said:

Where can I take a free career orientation test?

We Answered:

It's hard to find one where you don't have to create a profile :-( So you will have to sign up for an account, but it's still free.

Try the Princeton Review. They also have other good tests you can take:

Shawn Said:

I was recently hired by the USPS as a casual employee and have a few questions so please advise me. Thanks?

We Answered:

That is going to depend on how much you can absorb in the first 6 months and how high you score on the test. After 6 months you're eligible to take the test...but no guarantees. So, learn all you can and get yourself one of the Postal Carrier examinations...they sell them in bookstores.

Anthony Said:

Is it ever possible to find a high paying career without taking an exam before orientation?

We Answered:

jobs are hard to come by regardless of what they pay.

High paying???? anyhting with a lot of responsibility or pays 11 or more per hour is going to require some skill.

Felix Said:

How much bearing will a recent accident have on getting a job with the USPS?

We Answered:

It will not automatically disqualify you, but it could be a problem. On the other hand falsifying your records and saying you didn't have an accident will be an even bigger problem down the road when they pull your driver's abstract. Tell the truth. You have enough experience that they may overlook the one accident and make sure you're extremely careful while driving, especially during probation where one accident WILL cause your immediate termination.

Should I take the math placement test for college?

We Answered:

Dear troubled:

College placement exam is just one of those tests that you can do well, but not necessarily so. If you do bad on them, you will just have to take a couple of easy classes and get easy A's what would really boost your gpa on the long run. The negative side of this is that you may have to take a few classes. If you are paying per credit, you will be missing out. If you are full time, it won't matter since they charge you the same anyways.

If you are very good with math already, then you probably take it and try to do good on it so you don't have to. However, math is quite important, it can do wonders for you, if you learn to use it.

Writing can be fun, so is psychology, however, in the long run, can you make a living out of writing? Are you that good? Chances are, you are much more better off with a more realistic choice of studying. It would be wise to go to the labors department and read some of their statistics before you go ahead and make a choice on your major. That's way, you won't end up like me, studying for something that you will never use. :)

Best wishes

How can i choose a career or a college field ?

We Answered:

Some people go all the way through to finishing their bachelors degrees and STILL don't know what they have a passion for, or what type of work they would like to do.

Go back to school - perhaps starting at a community college - and take a variety of coursework. Begin exploring college catalogs and read the course descriptions. Find people who are doing interesting things and talk to them about how they got where they are today. Don't worry about the time it is taking you. Even if it takes several years to finish an undergraduate degree, you will look back and see that the time was short.

Did you already encounter the Occupational Outlook Handbook? I found these articles useful in learning about my career options. http://www.bls.gov/OCO/
At the end of each article there are links to professional association sites. You can usually find out more by looking around those types of sites.

The CoolWorks site is mainly for students/teachers looking for a summer job or seasonal work. It might spark an idea that will lead to something else. http://www.coolworks.com/

Good luck with your search. Remember, lots of people change careers when they're in their 30's, 40s and older. Its never too late and you're never too old to learn, change and grow.
