Choosing A Career

Jimmy Said:

What are 7 criteria I should focus on when choosing a career?

We Answered:

1. It depends what kind of nurse or chef you will be..Nurses ear more than 100K in some criteria.. but i think nurses are more than chef overall unless u r really a good chef working for a big restaurant.

2. Well it depends where you work. and how much you work..but usually in nursing it's not that flexible, they may call you at any time. Nurses have to work on holidays same do chef.

3. off-course nurses for now..you will get a job right the way after your RN LICENSE.

4. I don't know your interests so cant give you an answer for this, but if you like to be in a health care settings than be a nurse, if not than a chef..

Darlene Said:

What to consider when choosing a career?

We Answered:

There are other considerations to consider, as well.

There's pay, job security, difficulty of getting a job, hours expected to work, overtime availability, if they'll force you to work overtime, if salaried, recognize they don't pay you overtime, etc etc etc. Lots of considerations to think about.

Art tends to be bad in many ways. Graphic design, I know from experience, is very difficult to get into. Most people look for someone with experience, and it's extremely difficult to get the first job. My sister-in-law is in graphic design, and her friend's sister was the wife of the manager (director? Some high place) of a place where they needed a graphic designer. So, she was able to get that position. But generally, you have to know someone to get in.

A lot of arts positions are like that.

Sciences... you mentioned "work with medicine or spacecraft" sounds like you haven't even narrowed down the science you're interested in. It's a massive selection within there. Some things you may really enjoy. Nursing (medicine :P) is a good paying job, with tons of job security. And in certain jobs, it can be really fun! Which ones are fun depends on the person. At any level. Would working in a high paced ER, with everything constantly changing, with people dying if you make a mistake be fun? Some people find it so, like my mother.

It's really a matter of what your own motivations are. And again, some things in science would be fun.

How do I go about choosing a career that I enjoy?

We Answered:

It sounds like you would enjoy receptionist/admin. assistant, some kind of customer service tasks as well, like a call center for a bank in your area, a catalog cust. serv. rep, taking orders people place over the phone, or online. Or, it sounds like you could work as a secretary for someone high up like a CEO, etc., and if you could work for a company that is where you could possibly set up your own filing system, etc. that you would feel really good about. Maybe you could consider getting into business management classes, and consider starting your own company for helping people get organized, even iinterior decorating. May I suggest also, if you could make an appt. with a comm. college advisor, to see what classes they have to offer, and to help you decide what kind of career you want. Wish you the best. Take care.

Gladys Said:

Are there any dental hygienists out there who can provide words of wisdom in choosing this career?

We Answered:

Since most people only know about the need in nursing- that is what you hear about.

I myself am only in the process of starting the program, but fraom everyone that I have spoken with- they are happy and enjoy their choice. Would they do it over agine- all have told me yes, two have said that they would have done it sooner rather that waiting.

Yes it is a good choice- but it is a personal one. Ask around and take a good look at where you want to be. You'll know if it is right for you or not.

Good Luck.
