Find Your Career

Ann Said:

Do you find your career to be easier than being a student at your university?

We Answered:

I think that being a student is definitely harder because there's so much more to deal with. You have many classes, with different teachers, different students, which means, lots of different personalities along with a whole lot of work. There's of course the ocassional group work. So, you're constantly working around and dealing with so many different people. There's also the schedule changes to deal with every semester which can be challenging on the body and it's sleeping patterns. When you get out into the work force, yes, there are some occupations out there where you deal with many different people on a regular basis, but it's a little easier to handle. There's more structure and balance to the daily life. Honestly, when I finished my undergraduate courses, I looked and felt like hell, I attended summer school 3 years in a row, because I had changed majors so many time and I wanted to graduate on time. I was a mess. Now, I'm just a slight mess (just kidding, well, no.. I'm not) with student loans.

What is the best way to find your career path?

"Know thyself". You've got to understand who you are first. That means, your interests, your skills, your passions, your personality type...Don't ignore any of these. (Myers-Briggs is good. Don't trust the Kinsey on-line version. There are many other tests for all these categories)

Take tests to evaluate your traits. Don't rely on self-assessment, it's easy to fool yourself. Besides, people usually don't "know what the like" they "like what they know". You may be a whiz in math, but do you really want to be an engineer?

Ask people you trust. Ask several. People will often try to direct you to what THEY want. I know an abusive pastor who is this way. He's in the wrong job, and he's become abusive because he's miserable. Get several opinions and look for a common thread.

Don't look for a career, look for your "vocation". That translates to your "calling". You'll be happy, whether you're rich or not.

Don't ever stop trying to learn about the world and about yourself. You'll change thru the years, and you may change careers as you follow your calling.
