How To Pick A Career

Lisa Said:

How did you pick the career that you have?

We Answered:

Straight out of high school I majored in theater. The only thing was, you can't really make a living doing theater in Kentucky (where I live) and the odds of becoming a professional actress are pretty much zero... so I just decided to pick the next thing... I loved helping people and animals... Being a vet wasn't for me b/c I hate math and science, so I decided I wanted to help people. Teacher? No, I don't like kids... Nurse? No, I hate needles and don't have a lick of patience. I got my associates degree in Human Services and learned more about the field while getting my degree. Then I had to decide between psychology and social work. I wasn't getting such great grades in my psych classes so social work seemed to be the best fit for me.

I think you really just have to use process of elimination. If you want to do something with music but you don't want to commit to it as a career you can always be in a choir, band, etc. during your free time. And if you are having second thoughts about your beauty career then I would suggest not following through with it. It took me changing my major three times until I finally decided to become a social worker.

Just sit down with a piece of paper and start writing things that you enjoy doing. Do you want to help people? In what way do you want to help? What type of environment do you want to work in? There are a MILLION different types of careers out there, I know you will find what you are looking for if you just concentrate on what your good at. If you are great with doing hair and think you will enjoy that for the rest of your life then you're probably in the right place. If you are looking for something "more" you'll find it...

Something else I did was ask the people around me... ask your friends and family what they think about you... what are you good at? What are your strengths and weaknesses? You can also take one of those online career tests but be careful... when I took mine it said I should be a flight attendant!

Just remember that just because you don't choose to have a full time career in music does not mean you have to give music up- you can be active in music in SO many different ways :)

How do you pick a career?

We Answered:

For some people they don't find a career, a career finds them. After World War II, my grandfather took a job in insurance. He eventually ended up as the president. He did it for over 40 years and retired at 70, wealthy and beloved by those who had worked with him. Just shape your opportunities as they come at you. Use each as an experience and just be prepared to accept bumps along the way

How do you pick what career you would like to be in?

We Answered:

The best way to get information to help you make a decision is to speak with people in those roles. Then you can get a sense for what it entails, and see if it appeals to you.

You should check into the following areas:
-- training / schooling required
-- salary expectations and benefits
-- work / life balance
-- nature of work
-- job opportunities / employer locations
-- success factors

Make a pro / con list and see which jobs appeal to you after examining all of the above factors.

You could also take a few classes in photography, biology, and criminal sciences to see if the introductory material is still appealing to you.

Or you could try a free career test to see what the results suggest. Try one of these:

Good luck!!

how does a sophomore in high school pick a career?

We Answered:

okay, first dont think about a job. Think about what you love doing. What do you do on your free time? What you love or what you would have no desire on doing.
For example, you love to read or write. You can do either journalism or author or even being an editor.
If you love medicine, either nurse, assistant, doctor, surgeon.
If you love like solving crimes (being a CSI) or you want to put bad guys in jail, have justice.
It all depends what you love to do and what is your passion. Think about it and consider doing a career out of it.
Or go on google and type "all different careers" or something like that.
I really hope i helped.
God luck :)
