Boss: "What kind of business?"
You: "It's not really something I feel comfortable discussing. Nothing it wrong, but I do have to take care of it during regular business hours."

They can't really make you give them details about WHY you need the time off. They don't need to know anything beyond whether it is medical (for PTO due to illness) or personal (for using vacation PTO).

If you're an animal lover, emphasize that in any remarks on the form or during the interview. Let them know your strengths, if you have a lot of experience with / knowledge of cats, dogs, fish, or whatever your expertise is.

Beyond that, they are looking for people who can help their customers. So, you want to let them know you're service oriented and enjoy helping people (and pets!).

They may need you to fill in on the cash register, so be sure you understand how change is made and handed.

Finally, when you go to the store to apply or interview, dress and act appropriately. Look clean and neat. No chewing gum. That sort of thing.

If you notice they ask you the same question in many different ways so they don't want you changing your answers. I've had to take these tests for jobs before and I've always passed. The ones i took asked a lot of questions about stealing so make sure you answer no to everything about stealing so it looks like you strongly disagree

Failing the JCP assessment test won't hurt your other applications. If you do not pass the assessment for the next store, your application goes no further within their hiring system.

Your young age is probably a major factor, yes. If they say you can't 'retake' the assessment test, well, that's what they mean. Apply again in two years.

No serious retailer really wants a 16 year old kid to run a cash register or handle expensive goods.
