It is not something you want to hear but sometimes you spend your whole life thinking you want to do one thing and then when you are finally there you end up hating it.

There are a lot of people who were in my education program who wanted to be teachers, but they quite right after student teaching because they didn't realize how much paper work or classroom management or dealing with parents and administrators was involved. Not saying that will be you, but for many of them if they had no backup they would be stuck in a job they would hate (some do).

And English is 50/50 as far as the job market. You will find a teaching job I am sure, but if you decide to not teach, you will have a hard time finding any other kind of job.

Plus even if you get a teaching job and you love it, it never hurts to have another marketable skill, you will have paid summers off, a lot of teachers I know use that time to make a little extra cash.

Parents just want the best for their kids. He probably didn't mean to sound unsupportive or judgmental.

When it comes to the "arts" and such, many parents worry their kid will end up on the streets or living at home till they are 30. Really, its a tough business to get into if you want to make any money, and pay your bills. So in his head, he is thinking that by not supporting it he'll get your "head out of the clouds" and that you'll keep you day job.

If you really try at what you want to do, he'll be proud of you. Show you can be responsible and creative.
