air traffic controller - how hard is the psychometric test?

What country are you in? In the US you either get experience in the military or go to one of a few special schools, and an entrance exam isn't the largest part on getting hired. The test taken here is called the AT-SAT. You do really have to focus, the whole test is a measure of your focus. The AT-SAT is pretty much a few computer games. One flashes multiple numbers and ID's to you and if the number falls outside of a given range that changes without warning you have to type in that number's seperate ID and often times 3 different ID's will be out of the given range and you have to type in 3 sets of ID's in around 5 to 7 seconds while keeping an eye out for more wrong ID's. That test goes on for something like 20 minutes and requires complete focus. There are other tests like games that make it pretty much imposible to do perfectly, rapidly organizing data and seperating information and such. Most of these tests I'm convinced see how well you do in situations when you will fail and how you deal with it and how well you continue after mistakes. If you freeze after a simple error or misjudgement, that isn't a limitation a controller needs. There are still other planes depending on you forgetting abotu the error and helping them as you resolve the situation. Your degree really doesn't matter that it is in business. It would certianly help to know about aircraft, but more than anything it is the ability to process large amounts of data rapidly and calmly that counts.

Psychometric Test?

We Answered:

While aptitude test will indicate at a certain level of your cognitive ability in areas like problem solving or verbal ability, trying to find the ideal job also depends of level of interest. Holland developed a theory (RIASEC) that denotes that your personality is related to success and satisfaction if you are in a good job fit for the occupation. A very good test that I used to use for career counselling was the Strong Interest Inventory. It has been shown to have high reliability (both coefficient of stability and equivalence). It also will assess whether you prefer hands-on training or academic environments.

One caveat is that the test measures interest as opposed to ability in such areas. That is why aptitude tests might complement interest tests. There are many websites that offer this online, but I advise to steer away from shortened or free versions. I would also steer away from MBTI (no reliability) and other "personality tests" that have no psychometric properties to speak of.
Invest in taking the full Strong test. Good luck!
