If you want to travel join as any seagoing rate. Boatswain Mate, Gunner's Mate, etc. If you want to be in a workspace on a submarine for a few years (not every single day, but that will be your assignment for several years) join as a nuke. It's true that they are very smart, but they have a lot of responsibility and not a lot of down time. Keep in mind that a lot of nations don't want nuclear submarines in their ports, so that sort of assignment rules out the travel. Subs and carriers are the only two vehicles that use nuclear reactors as a power plant. So you're options will be limited as to the type of vessel.

Joining without a job is also a mistake. You will be able to see a lot of jobs, all of them from behind your mop bucket. Those that join the US Navy without a rate are considered un-designated, sometimes called strikers. They do a lot of cleaning and helping the cooks since they have no assigned work space. It's sort of like the Navy's temp agency, or manpower pool.

As far as being "throw into a lower rate job" untrue. You'll be show a lost of what's available, and the information on each rate will make it sound great. None of those information sheets say "gets up really darn early to help make eggs."

I have taken a career test and it hit pretty close to things I was interested in but its only a guideline for sure. Local unemployment offices or goverment services might have something like this for you. I think the best way is to think about all the things you like doing in your spare time and try and find a way to make money at it. :)

the till at mac donalds, then you get to do maths, speak languages, racial chemistry and biological fun in the evenings.

Everything mentioned so far has nothing to do with fashion so you are on your own there but... perhaps alternate with Burger King so you get to change uniforms.
