please critique my personal statement?

We Answered:

You have some good solid fact which is essential, many people fail by describing themselves with a list of superlatives with out backing them up with examples.

I do think you've started in the wrong order though, I'm not sure someone reading it is interested in the career flexibility it offers you but more how this is a path you've pursued throughout your education and that this is the natural progression.

I would take out the part about your parent upbringing, again the person reading it will just not care, it's irrelevant and frankly is completely out of place in a supporting statement.

Keep to the facts, make positive points not negative ones backed by fact and don't ramble. Make every point count and keep the paragraphs relatively short.

Also get as many opinions as possible, you've come here so that's a good start but also as at least two or three of your teachers.

Good luck.

I need help with job options after law school, in particular, the military vs. government agencies...?

We Answered:

Government agencies are always hiring. I just attended a luncheon with a member of the IRS trying to recruit recent graduates with <1 year of work experience as a lawyer. The FBI is a possibility. You can also try prosecutor or public defender work.

The problem, though, is that the economy is so slow that people who would have otherwise gone into biglaw or mid-sized firms have been no-offered at OCI and are now looking for government or public interest work. Government and public interest legal jobs can be just as competitive as biglaw, and sometimes more so. I've even see ads for government jobs that explicitly stated that you wouldn't be interviewed from a school ranked below #25.

Does your school do OCI? How high is your law school ranked? These two factors, as well as your 1L grades, are going to impact your job prospects significantly. Obviously, law school grades are part luck, part skill, especially with that nasty curve, so I won't tell you to "keep your grades up." However, if you end up getting good grades and can write on/grade on to law review or a secondary journal, do it. If your school doesn't do OCI, start mass mailing firms, public interest organizations, and government agencies at the end of your first year. Hopefully, you'll get a 2L summer associate's position or a clerkship that will catapult your career.
