There are loads,but the pay is not the best.

You would be better to look in the London evening paper,or just walk around the sites.
Normally the lads on site will give you a few phone numbers.

Make Business Link for London your first point for help and advice. They're great for when you're thinking of starting up and they also offer support after you're up and running. (We've used them over the years.)

Setting up as a sole trader could work but you might consider being a limited company. It's not too difficult to do nor too expensive. (We've set up 2 limited companies and are about to start another one.)

Make sure you keep all your business and personal finance separate. As soon as you know what kind of business you're running and have its name, apply for a business bank account. Most banks give you between 12 and 24 months' free banking when you start.

It is still up to the Contractor (in this case the recruitment agency) to consider the 'status' of the person working for them. ie if the worker needs to be treated as an employee, or if they need to be taken on as a subcontractor (a self employed person). If you decide that the worker does need to be treated as a self employed person, yes you do need to deduct tax from them under the 'Construction Industry Scheme' (CIS).

The rules changed slightly from April 2007. CIS4 registration cards don't exist anymore. The workers (known as 'subcontractors') still need to register with HMRC. They give the Contractor their 10 digit 'unique taxpayer Reference'. The Contractor (you) telephones the CIS Helpline on 0845 366 7899 and gives the HMRC the subcontractors reference, HMRC then tells you the % of tax you need to deduct from payments you make to your subcontractors. This will be 20%, or none, or in some cases you will be told to deduct 30% (the old rate used to be 18%).

As a contractor, you would also need to complete a CIS300 form 'Contractors Monthly Return' each month. The returns must be received back by HMRC by 19th of the month, or penalties are issued.
