Why not take your retail experience and look for a Communications role within a retailer. Lots of them are based in NY and/or NJ and all spend thousands on advertising. Even if they work with an outside ad firm, they still have Communication roles internally. Try the Marketing or Public Relations departments.

First, I would check with your state unemployment office, they may be able to provide assistance while you look for work, they also might be able to set you up on job interviews. If they cant help you, or do dont want to go to them. Your next best option is to talk to your landlord and then go out and try to find work. Some places like fast food, and retail are always looking for people. Shitty jobs but at least youll have some income.
