As for the "goofball" thing - as someone said, this is merely your way of avoiding responsibility for any of your wrongdoings - and it doesn't seem at ALL to me that he found your "goofball ways" endearing at all.
I will bet my last penny that when he came back into the office and saw that your assignment was now over, he said "Phew, thank GOD for that".

I think it's wrong.One, it's actually illegal to put anything that isn't mailed into a mailbox. For real. (Not that I care, just saying.)
Two, you are failing to respect that he has a relationship, telling him that you are open to him beginning a relationship with you while the one he made sure you knew about is still ongoing.
When you have a relationship of your own, are you going to be cool with other girls giving their number to your guy and telling him how great he is?
